The reference molecular approach for RNA viruses: reverse transcription of RNA into cDNA followed by amplification and detection.
Many of the most important infectious threats — influenza, SARS-CoV-2, dengue, chikungunya, enteroviruses — are RNA viruses that cannot be detected by DNA PCR alone. RT-PCR converts their RNA genome into amplifiable cDNA.
