Why This Test Matters

Many of the most important infectious threats — influenza, SARS-CoV-2, dengue, chikungunya, enteroviruses — are RNA viruses that cannot be detected by DNA PCR alone. RT-PCR converts their RNA genome into amplifiable cDNA.

Clinical Utilization

Detection of RNA viruses in respiratory, febrile-illness and CNS syndromes; forms the chemistry behind ID Labs syndromic multiplex panels.

Advantages

  • Enables detection of RNA viruses
  • Real-time quantification possible
  • High sensitivity and specificity

Limitations

  • RNA is labile — specimen handling and transport affect results
  • Window period and low viral load can yield false negatives
  • Detects nucleic acid, not infectivity
