CNS Infection (Meningitis / Encephalitis)
Bacterial meningitis can be fatal within 24 hours; early aetiological diagnosis of CNS infection determines therapy and outcome.
Acute infections of the central nervous system — meningitis and encephalitis — are neurological emergencies. More than a million people are affected by meningitis globally each year, and bacterial meningitis carries high mortality when treatment is delayed.
CSF culture is specific but slow (up to 72 hours) and insensitive after antibiotics; serology contributes little to acute management. Multiplex PCR on CSF detects bacteria, viruses and fungi within hours, including in patients who have already received antibiotics, while conventional investigations continue in parallel.
