Fungal Infection
Invasive fungal disease is difficult to diagnose early; biomarkers, culture and molecular tests each contribute evidence.
Invasive candidiasis, aspergillosis and cryptococcosis cause substantial mortality in immunocompromised and critically ill patients. Blood culture detects only a minority of invasive fungal disease; biomarkers (e.g., galactomannan, beta-D-glucan, cryptococcal antigen) and molecular tests add sensitivity, while culture remains necessary for species identification and susceptibility testing.
